30 Days of Qeptember – Question #5

Today is September 5th which means it’s the fifth day of my 30 day series called “30 Days of Qeptember”. If you want to know what the 30 Days of Qeptember is please click here.

I didn’t have any questions submitted for today so I decided to come up with my own question:

What’s your thoughts on denominations?

That’s an awesome question if I might say so myself however I am going to keep this short as really there isn’t much to say.

I believe denomination is a term used to be stumbling block for the Church. I really do. I don’t like that word at all and it’s not biblical.

Webster’s Dictionary defines “Denomination” as the following:

name, designation; especially: a general name for a category; a religious organization uniting local congregations in a single legal and administrative body.

I like what Ethan Longhenry of Associated Content said back in July of 2007. “The dictionary gives us the first, and preeminent, definition of a denomination: a group of congregations that are bound together in a religious organization with an administrative body. When we read about the church in the New Testament, do we see such an organization? By no means! The elders of the church in Ephesus were told to shepherd their flock, not the flock of any other church (cf. Acts 20Open Link in New Window). While there was certainly kinship felt amongst members of different local congregations (e.g., Philippi and Thessalonica), there is no evidence that any group of congregations were legislated by some earthly head or administration. Therefore, even according to the dictionary definition of the term “denomination,” the Church that the Lord established is not a denomination.”

I think that sums it up. Really, I mean, what denomination was Jesus? HAHA! Exactly so why are we “Christians” so stuck on denomination. We should be unifying ourselves as one body. We are are “The Body of Christ” so why in our legalistic world are we trying to be “Separate Bodies”.

When you work as a team that doesn’t mean that you agree with all the other members of the team. Sometimes you have different ideas or thoughts. So what stops the “Church” from coming together and working as a team?

It frustrates me when I see religious people choosing to not connect with others in other denominations. Makes me want to go get a fish and slap them in the face a couple times. We have to pull together folks. We have a WORLD to reach!!

Ask yourself, do you tend to keep to your own church friends or do you reach out to those from other “denominations”.

Last Note: (Don’t worry it’s free) take the “n” and the “m” in denominations and switch them. Then it becomes Demonination. No, I am not getting “Spooky” on ya … just every time I see the word denominations for some reason I see demon. Take it for what it’s worth.
